Lão Ông ________________________ Palm Beach Post (newsmemory.com) Giving credit to false beliefs threatens shared reality One of the most disturbing trends in public discourse is the idea that there are no facts — there are just beliefs, and they all deserve equal weight. Take, for example, a meeting that U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham had with his supporters, a mostly gray-haired group, in South Carolina this month. "If you haven't had the vaccine, you ought to think about getting it, because if you're my age," Graham started to say, then stopped when the people in his audience interrupted him with boos and shouts of "No!" "I didn't tell you to get it," Graham said after they stopped yelling at him. "You ought to think about it." They shouted, "No!" again. Graham persisted. "Well, I'm glad I got it," he said. "Ninety- two percent of the people in the hospitals in South Carolina aren't vaccinated." "No!" audience members shouted again. Others shouted, "You're wrong!" ... And that's dangerous. There's a concerted effort being made to put opinion and fact on equal footing, to elevate an intangible "belief " as a worthy rebuke to an observable fact. In other news, there are annual conferences attended by people who gather to share their belief that the Earth is not round. It's a recent phenomenon. Hundreds gather in convention halls to hear presentations with names such as "Space is fake," while validating each other's belief in nonsense. "I have no problem with anybody that wants to believe we live on a ball. That's their choice," one of the conference attendees, David Weiss, told CNN. "It's just not something I resonate with." The QAnon conspiracy theorists, who believe without a shred of evidence that top Democrats are abducting babies and drinking their blood, have become visible, regular attendees at Republican rallies, as well as the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol to overthrow a lawfully conducted election. ... The observable real world, the one informed by history and science, is under attack by those who are attempting to dress up lies to suit their less-than-noble objectives. If nothing's a fact, and a shared reality doesn't exist, then (trump and QAnon) lies have the same weight as truth – whether it's about COVID- 19, the flatness of the Earth, Democrats drinking baby blood in the basement of a Washington, D.C., pizza parlor that doesn't have a basement, or the existence of human-extermination camps in Europe during World War II. fcerabino@gannett.com @FranklyFlorida |
